Affiliate marketing is one of those business opportunities that takes very little upfront capital to get started. It has a relatively low bar to entry, which does mean that literally anyone that has a computer and an internet connection can get started.
That said, it does not mean it is easy. In fact, most affiliate marketers fail on their first and second tries. There are a few things you will need to do and understand to help improve your chances of success.
I need to be upfront. Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You will not be a millionaire overnight, and almost anyone that says they became one overnight is literally lying to you. What they are selling you is the hope to become a millionaire overnight, and the only one making money is them when you buy a course off of them to “teach you the secrets that no one knows.”
Here are some of what I call the prerequisites of what you need to begin affiliate marketing and help improves your odds of success!
Great Work Ethic
Affiliate marketing is hard work. The difference between this and a regular 9-5 job is the fact that you have no one telling you what to do. You are your own boss. It is a business that you created. In order for your business to succeed, you will need to put in the hours of getting your business off the ground.
Some things that you will have to do are research, content creation, and self-motivation. Research is the central focus on affiliate marketing. But wait, aren’t we supposed to be marketing other products? What would I need to do research for? Great question. You found a great product to review, but know virtually nothing about it. What do you do? Google information on the product, search for reviews and gather as much information as you can on the product and produce your own review.
People want reviews, and it shows that people want to look at as much information as they can to determine if they want the product or not. You may even do this as well!
Then there is the content creation. You will want to do your research and create posts of about 1000 words or more. You are going to want to do this at least once a week, ideally three times a week. That is a lot of work. If you want to be successful, you will not want to skimp out on this. These posts will be ranked for more than just the keyword you selected, so having many different posts on different products will help you gain more traffic.
Before you can do any of the above, you will need a niche to be in. What we mean by niche is like the outdoors niche. Within the outdoors niche, there are many different sub-niches as well. Things like hunting, fishing, kayaking, and boating to name a few. Then you may want to break this down even further. Lets look at hunting (I Love to hunt). You have small game, big game, predator hunting, and waterfowl hunting to name a few. Ill go with big game. Big game in my area is Deer, Turkey and Bear. Lets select Deer hunting. Deer hunting is one of the most popular sub-niches in the hunting niche. There are so many products to buy and select that I would not have any issue finding products to market.
A good starting point is to find out what you are interested in and go from there. This could help get you started on products and keyword research.
Another thing about niches, lets say you don’t know what to market. Or have an interest that not many people share. You are not limited to things you are interested in. Google different products that you see and see if they have any searches or similar products on google. This can help to determine if you have a good market on your hands.
You just want to make sure there are a variety of products and affiliate programs to select products from!
Some of the basic things you will need to get started and be successful are a computer, cellphone, and a stable internet connection.
A computer is a must. You will need to type up content and be able to do research. I use Microsoft Office as well. I make spreadsheets to keep track of good keywords. Ise use Word to create my posts, and then tweak them in WordPress. I use the calendar to keep track of my upcoming tasks to complete for the month. The computer is an indispensable part of my business.
In addition, a cell phone, while not necessary, is another tool to keep you connected to your audience. I like to use Instagram, and really the only way to post is to use a phone. Sure, you can trick it using some features on the computer, but I don’t always want to be bringing my computer everywhere I go. Another great feature of the cell phone is the Mobile Hotspot. This is great for when you are traveling or want to go to your favorite place to chill and don’t have an internet connection. This way you don’t have an excuse as to why you are not getting your content posted.
Lastly, but definitely not least, you want to have a fast and stable internet connection. Slow internet will definitely slow down your process of getting the information you need and posting to your site. You also want it to be stable, and not cutting off and on all the time.
You may be thinking what kind of skills would you need to do Affiliate Marketing? Turns out there are many skills, but I will talk about the most basic skills. You will definitely need basic computer skills, Social Media skills, and writing skills.
If we are going to be WRITING reviews, we will want to make sure that we can type and convey our information easily to our readers. If we want our readers to stay with us, we want to have good writing skills as our only true interaction with them is through our text. It is also important to understand that you do not need a PHD in writing. Write as you would speak, but make sure it easily conveys the message.
Next comes to Social Media. I hate using Social Media. Ill be the first to admit it. BUT, a good portion of the world is on Social Media, so it would be futile to resist using it as a good majority of people use social media to make purchasing decisions. It also puts your products in front of Millions of people daily. Even if 1% of people were to check out your site and products, that a lot of potential customers. Waiting for people to hopefully find you in Google is not going to get you potential customers that fast.
You will also need basic computer skills. Being able to type and maneuver your computer will greatly help out when doing the myriad of tasks that you will have. There are different types of Operating Systems out there. MAC definitely has the appeal and sharpness when it comes to photos and such, but is an expensive computer if you’re just starting out. Windows is a great option, as there are numerous different computers for whatever your budget is. Chromebooks with Android support are amazing devices to use and are relatively cheap. The android feature allows you to download many different apps to help, and most apps are free! There is Linux, but unless you are versed in Linux, it may not be the best option for you, but is free!
Affiliate Marketing is a great option to be able to make a side income and get started in making money online. There are many things that will need to be learned, and you will need to get a website to have a place to put your content and be found. It is not a get-rich-quick scheme, so patience will be needed as it could take 6 months or longer to get any sales.
It can be started for a very minimal amount of money but be prepared to invest a lot of time getting content published and get ranked.
