I have asked myself this question in the past: “Can I do affiliate marketing?” You may be asking yourself the same question. The answer is yes!
There are several questions you should ask yourself before you start though! Starting a website requires a business mindset. Why a business mindset? Believe it or not, a blog with product reviews is a business.
Research, the dreaded word! Or is it?
Many people when looking at starting a business, myself included, have an idea for a business that they think is great, and it very well may be a great idea. What they don’t do, and I did this too, is research the local market for their competition and niche needs.
Your niche may be selling unicorn bracelets and may have little to no competition, but if you don’t do market research and find that there is not a market in your area for unicorn bracelets, you are most likely going to fail.
Same thing with affiliate marketing. If you don’t research your niche, you may not see traffic to your site. No traffic means no revenue.
The first question is to ask yourself: Is the market good for my niche?
Starting any job or business requires some type of training. You look at job descriptions and notice things like needing Microsoft Office experience, experience using computers, marketing experience, etc. How do you get this experience if you have never done this? Through some sort of training, whether it be in person, online, or from a book.
There are a plethora of training options, and personally, I use the online option. There are a ton of videos on YouTube to help you out, and plenty of sites dedicated to something you are looking for.
But, the set back is not knowing whether those videos are getting you the information you need or just trying to sell you something to “find out the secrets no one knows!”
The next best option is to pay for training through Udemy or some other platform that specializes in online learning. This way you can learn on your own time and practice what you learn right away.
I recommend looking at the training options here at Wealthy Affiliate. The training is on point and will get you going in the right direction with affiliate marketing. Check it out here to see a sample of the training you can go through.
So the next question is: What skills do I have and what training will I need to do to learn new skills?
The Right Niche
What are you passionate about? What do you like that you have no problems writing about all the time? These 2 questions can get you thinking about what your niche will be.
Now, is your niche something that can bring in a decent income. Let’s say, for example, you really like straws. Straws are everywhere! You like curly straws. Is that something that you can write about often and has a decent market. Maybe or maybe not.
Some big niches are health and wellness, make money from home, beauty products, outdoor gear, and adventures to name a few. These are really competitive, but that does not mean you can’t become an authority figure in these.
You may consider breaking down that niche into smaller sub-niches. Let’s take the outdoors niche and break it down somewhat. You could take it and break it down to biking, hiking, hunting, fishing, kayaking, and boating to name a few. Let’s say you are into hunting. You could take that into big game, small game, waterfowl, black powder, bow hunting, etc.
See how that can help you narrow down in a specific micro-niche? It helps to know what you want to talk about!
Will some niches make more money than others? Sure. Curly straws may not have that much of a market like outdoors activities would.
You will have to pick wisely!
Your next question will be: What niche do I want to take on?
The Right Equipment
Now that you know what you want to start a blog about and what type of products you want to market, do you have the right equipment?
Are you going to mainly post photos and write posts? You will need a computer and a smartphone or camera. Are you going to post videos on YouTube and have a link your blog to it? You may need a video camera, a GoPro or something to record.
Having the right equipment for what you are trying to accomplish is paramount to your success. If you don’t have the right equipment, you will not get very far.
It may be an initial investment up front but could help pay dividends in the future.
This question will be: Do I have what I need to accomplish my goals?
The Right Mindset- Very Crucial
You could have the best budget in the world and picked the best niche that makes tons of money. But is your mind right for the task at hand? Having doubts is something everyone has. It how you handle doubts and negative influences around you that will get you ahead.
If you tell yourself you can’t, you won’t! Even though this is an online adventure and you are creating something to get your name out there, it needs to be treated as a business as well.
Having a solid understanding of what needs to happen and actually making it happen are two different things. It’s really easy to go into information overload and actually not accomplish anything.
Think positive thoughts. It may not seem like it at first, as it can take a while for traffic to roll in, but if you have the patience and the positive mental attitude to succeed, you can make it happen!
The last question is: Do I have the patience and the right attitude to make this happen?
If you have these things, then Yes! You Can Do Affiliate Marketing!
You can do affiliate marketing with a minimum of these things. Sure, things are always evolving and you will need to constantly be learning.
In my opinion, though, these things above will get you on your way to getting started in affiliate marketing.
All you really have to do is believe in yourself and just get to it! I didn’t believe I could do it, but I am here today getting it done!
