What is an affiliate marketing business? I get this question all the time when I say that I have a couple of websites I work on at home. You may have heard someone talking about it or read about it and are asking yourself the same question.
In short, affiliate marketing is marketing someone else’s product or service, through their affiliate program, and if someone buys the product through your affiliate link, you get a commission!
Easier said than done. An affiliate marketing business is just like any business. There are certain things you need in order to have a chance of success:
- a presence
- great work ethic
- a great product or service (in this case, reviews)
- and persistence
Imagine if you will, that you have a business. You have no storefront, website, flyers, business cards, traffic, etc. People would have no clue you exist.
Your website is your storefront, but how do people know to go there. This is where you need to get your name out there and increase your presence. I have a sticker for my site right on the lid of my computer and position myself to face people so they can see it and spark their interest.
Some tools used to increase your web presence are:
- other people’s blog post
These are just a few and you can use whatever you like. Get creative. Remember, without traffic you have no business!
we have all seen the ads on YouTube with people in front of their mansions, expensive cars, telling you that this can be you very fast. If that was the case, none of us would go to a job and instead would get-rich-quick.
Unfortunately, that’s not the way it works and these people make money by “selling” false hope. Affiliate marketing will not make you rich overnight and can take 6 months or more to make money.
Patience is the key when starting any business, and affiliate marketing is no different. You will need to make your presence known, attract visitors, and build trust, just like any other business. Having patience and continuously building your brand will eventually get the traffic rolling in.
A Great Work Ethic
How many of us started a new job, worked very hard to prove our worth, and then started becoming complacent and slowed down a little bit? I know I have!
Building your affiliate business and getting traffic and sales will require tremendous effort. Procrastination leads to little traffic and sales.
You have to keep working and always improving your position to make your presence known, and this will require a good work ethic.
Remember this: Procrastination ->no posts->no traffic->no sales->no money!
This will require patience and perseverance!!!
The lifeblood of your business! No matter how nice your site looks and how many product reviews you have, if you don’t have traffic, you have no business and money coming in.
There are several ways to help you get traffic. Some are paid and some are free! I tend to stick to the free traffic, and I do this with keyword research. Utilizing the proper keywords, your post could be found and drive traffic to your site. This is one aspect of Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Finding Keywords that people are searching for in relation to your product or service will help drive traffic to your site, which puts more people in front of your reviews and possibly get some sales.
Traffic is a necessity for any business, whether online or offline!
A Great Product or Service (A Niche)
OK so let say you decided on starting an affiliate marketing business. You are ready to get started! But you don’t know what to market.
You will need a Niche, such as in Outdoor Equipment. You can pick a broad niche, like outdoor equipment, or shrink it down to a micro-niche, like kayaking. It will need to be something you are interested in and can write about for a long time. Once you have that established, you will need to sign up for an affiliate program, like Amazon Associate.
You will need to pick a product you want to review, write about it (review it), and post it to your website, and hope traffic will come, read your review, and purchase.
Having products that people are actually looking for and buying will help drive traffic to your site, and lead to money.
Just the Basics
These points above are just the basics. Just as in any business, you will want to be dedicated and willing to sacrifice time and effort to get this off the ground and potentially make money.
Procrastinating will not get you to where you want to go, so you will need to continuously be getting something done to improve your site.
It will not happen overnight, and you are not always guaranteed to make money, just like any other business. Hard work and dedication will help your chances of success.
